In at the Deep End

Deep End Theatre Company is Cheltenham's most innovative theatre company. It is self-financing and has, in its short life, produced plays which have won many of the top awards handed out by the Gloucestershire Drama Association.

We know from talking to people who have seen our plays that they feel we have given them a fantastic evening's entertainment and that they will support our future productions.

We would like the opportunity to spread the word to more people and with a compratively small amount of financial backing, we could reach a much wider audience. We can also offer an ideal opportunity for a business to raise its profile and give its name to a credible and popular local arts group.

A company backing a Deep End production would have its name on all publicity posters and flyers, would have high-profile advertising in the programme and would be offered free tickets and an exclusive reception after the opening night.

If you would like to support Playhouse Creatures please contact the secretary, Judith Baker on 01242 253130 or use the email link on this website.

The History of Deep End Theatre Company

In late 2005, Hatherley Players and Board-Walkers merged to form a new group “The Deep End Theatre Company” based at the Playhouse theatre.  Both former groups gained a strong reputation for challenging drama, hilarious comedies and even the occasional musical!  The groups shared the major theatre awards over the earlier three seasons.

The Board-Walkers Theatre Company was established in 1982.  The four founder members quickly brought together a core of enthusiastic amateurs, many of whom had never before been involved in amateur drama of any sort.  The first production “Treble Laughter” (3 one-act comedies) at Holy Apostles Hall in Charlton Kings got the show on the road and since that time they never looked back.  The Board-Walkers’ reputation for good drama was maintained throughout its 23 year history and the group regularly achieved prizes in the Gloucestershire Drama Association full length play festival.  The Board-Walkers name continues as a society which presents occasional one-act plays.  Keep your eyes open for these events as they never fail to entertain.

The Hatherley Players first came together to perform in Up Hatherley, Cheltenham in 1986, when a group of like-minded people formed to stage productions to raise money for local needs. The first production in front of a paying audience was Godspell - quite an ambitious project for people with no real experience of acting, singing or directing.

The Deep End Theatre Company staged its launch production "Son of Man" in March 2006 to great audience and critical acclaim and quickly went on to establish itself as one of the main resident societies at The Playhouse Theatre in Cheltenham, producing three shows per year.
